TEST DAYS

TESTS ARE A LEARNING EXPERIENCE. JUST LIKE COMPETITIONS, THEY ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO DEMONSTRATE THE SKILLS YOU HAVE ACQUIRED THROUGH HARD WORK AND DEDICATION. THE TEST PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR SKATERS SO THEY REACH GOALS AND SUCCESS IN THEIR SKATING. YOU MAY ATTEMPT TESTS AT ANY AGE.

UNLIKE BADGES, SKATE CANADA TESTS ARE TRIED ON SPECIAL TEST DAYS AND EVALUATED BY A SKATE CANADA TRAINED JUDGE. LOW TEST DAYS – PRELIMINARY TO SENIOR BRONZE TESTS ARE USUALLY HELD 2-3 TIMES PER YEAR. HIGH TEST DAYS – SENIOR BRONZE TO GOLD TESTS ARE HELD USUALLY 3-4 TIMES PER YEAR AND ARE HELD AT SPECIAL HIGH TEST DAYS, ARRANGED IN A CENTRAL LOCATION FOR ALL SKATERS IN THE REGION. LOW TEST DAYS ARE COMBINED WITH OTHER CLUBS AS WELL.

SKATERS TAKE TESTS IN ICE DANCE, SKATING SKILLS, FREESKATE, AND INTERPRETIVE.

WHEN A TEST DAY IS APPROACHING, AND A COACH FEELS YOUR SKATER IS READY TO TEST, YOU WILL BE CONTACTED WITH THE DETAILS OF THE DATE, LOCATION AND TIME OF THE TEST.

THERE ARE FEES FOR TAKING TESTS- $20.00 PER TEST for Skate Regina Members

COACHES BILL FOR THEIR TIME AND EXPENSES AT TEST DAYS.   YOU WILL RECIEVE A BILL AFTER THE TEST DAY, FOR THE DANCE PARTNERS TIME AND EXPENSES, AND YOU WILL ALSO BE BILLED BY THE CLUB HOSTING THE TEST DAY, FOR ICE EXPENSES, JUDGE EXPENSES, AND ANY OTHER MISCELLANIOUS EXPENSES. THESE FEES MUST BE PAID WHETHER YOUR CHILD RECIEVES A PASS OR RE TRY FOR THEIR TEST. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK OR INJURED AND UN ABLE TO TAKE THE TEST UNLESS YOU NOTIFY THE CLUB HOSTING THE TEST DAY, 14 DAYS IN ADVANCE OF THE TEST DAY.

SKATERS MUST ARRIVE IN THE ARENA 1 HOUR AHEAD OF THEIR SCHEDULLED TEST TIME, AS TEST DAYS RARELY RUN ON TIME. PLEASE BE IN THE ARENA 30 – 45 MINUTES AHEAD OF YOUR TEST TIME IF YOU ARE THE FIRST TEST OF THE DAY. SKATERS SHOULD EAT SOMETHING LIGHT AND HEALTHY BEFORE THE TEST, BUT NOT A BIG MEAL. BRING WARM CLOTHING OR A BLANKET WITH YOU TO STAY WARM BEFORE AND AFTER THE TEST. BE SURE TO FIND YOUR COACH AND CHECK IN WITH THEM AS THEY WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOU NEED TO PUT YOUR SKATES ON, ANY CHANGES TO THE SCHEDULE AND GIVE YOU SOME LAST MINUTE REMINDERS.

SKATERS MUST BE DRESSED APPROPRIATELY FOR TESTS – SKATING DRESSES, BEIGE TIGHTS, AND NEAT HAIR PULLED OFF THE FACE FOR GIRLS, AND TRIM PANTS AND A TRIM SHIRT OR SWEATER FOR BOYS. MAKE SURE YOUR SKATES AND LACES ARE CLEAN AND NEAT. SKATERS MAY WEAR A LIGHT SWEATER OR JACKET FOR THE WARM UP, WHICH MUST BE REMOVED FOR THE TEST AS THE JUDGE NEEDS TO SEE THE POSTURE OF THE SKATER. SOMETHING WITH A ZIPPER OR BUTTONS IS BEST – NO HOODIES AND NOTHING THAT NEEDS TO GO OVER THE HEAD. WATCHES, NECKLACES AND BRACELETS SHOULD BE REMOVED BEFORE THE TEST. EARRINGS MAY BE WORN AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT TOO LONG. GIRLS CUSTOMARILY WEAR SOME MAKE UP, ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT REQUIRED. PLEASE NOTE – IF UNDERWEAR IS VISIBLE UNDER THE SKATING DRESS IT SHOULD NOT BE WORN!

DO NOT ARRIVE AT THE TEST DAY WITH FRESHLY SHARPENED SKATES. IF YOU GET SKATES SHARPENED BEFORE A TEST DAY, MAKE SURE SKATERS HAVE AT LEAST 1 SESSION TO SKATE ON THEM BEFORE THE TEST. SKATERS SHOULD REMEMBER TO BRING SKATE GUARDS, SOAKERS, AND A TOWEL WITH THEM TO THE TEST DAY. EXTRA CLIPS AND HAIR SPRAY IS A GOOD IDEA AS WELL, IN ADDITION TO A NEEDLE AND THREAD. SKATERS WHO ARE TAKING A FREESKATE SOLO TEST OR INTERPRETIVE TEST NEED TO REMEMBER TO BRING TWO COPIES OF THEIR SOLO MUSIC.   BRING WATER WITH YOU AND IT IS NOT A BAD IDEA TO BRING AN EXTRA DRESS OR PAIR OF TIGHTS – JUST IN CASE.

THERE WILL BE A SHORT WARM UP BEFORE EACH SET OF TESTS ON ICE. SKATERS SHOULD DO A BASIC OFF ICE WARM UP BEFORE HAND – LIGHT JOGGING, SKIPPING ROPE, STRETCHING ETC. THIS SHOULD BE DONE IN THE DRESSING ROOM OR AN AREA OF THE ARENA AWAY FROM THE TESTING THAT IS GOING ON.

SKATERS SHOULD USE THE WASHROOM BEFORE THE START OF THEIR ON ICE WARM UP.

SKATERS ARE ASSESSED ONE AT A TIME BY AN EVALUATOR ON A PASS OR RE TRY BASIS. SKATERS WILL RECIEVE A TEST SHEET AT EITHER THE END OF THE TEST DAY OR DURING A FLOOD, WHICH WILL INDICATE IF THE SKATER HAS RECIEVED A PASS OR RE TRY FOR THE TEST. A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CHECK MARKS SATISFACTORY OR BETTER MUST BE ACHIEVED IN ORDER TO PASS. THE PRELIMINARY LEVEL TESTS ARE THE EASIEST WHILE THE GOLD LEVEL TESTS ARE THE HARDEST. PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILDS TEST SHEET IN A SAFE SPOT – THIS IS PROOF THAT YOUR CHILD HAS PASSED THE TEST AND THERE HAVE BEEN CASES IN THE PAST WHERE PAPERWORK GETS MIXED UP AND TESTS DO NOT GET RECORDED – IN CASES LIKE THIS, IF YOU HAVE THE TEST SHEET TO PROVE THE RESULT OF THE TEST, YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO RE TAKE THE TEST. RE TRIES ARE COMMON AND SKATERS AND PARENTS NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR THIS OUTCOME, AS IT WILL HAPPEN AT SOME POINT IN A SKATERS TESTING CAREER. TESTS ARE NOT EASY TO PASS AND TAKE A LOT OF HARD WORK. DANCE TESTS HAVE A MINIMUM NUMBER OF SEQUENCES THAT SKATERS NEED TO PERFORM FOR THE TEST AND DEPENDING ON THEIR PERFORMANCE, THE JUDGE MAY WANT TO SEE ADDITIONAL SEQUENCES. THE SKATER PERFORMS THEIR DANCE UNTIL THE JUDGE HAS SEEN ENOUGH IN WHICH CASE, THE MUSIC WILL STOP. SKATERS MUST BE VERY QUIET AT A TEST DAY ESPECIALLY AT ICE LEVEL WAITING FOR THEIR TURN TO GO ON THE ICE AS THE JUDGE NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE ON THE TEST BEING PERFORMED AND THE SKATER BEING TESTED NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE ON SKATING THEIR BEST.   PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WATCH FROM ICE LEVEL – THEY MUST BE SITTING IN THE BLEACHERS.   DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME OF SKATING SKILLS AND FREESKATE TESTS, A CERTAIN NUMBER OF ELEMENTS MAY BE RE SKATED (TRIED A SECOND TIME) IF NECCESSARY, IN ORDER TO PASS. THERE ARE NO RE SKATES WITH DANCE TESTS OR INTERPRETIVE TESTS.

BEND YOUR KNEES ON TEST DAY AND REMEMBER – YOUR PERFORMANCE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT. MOST SKATERS DON’T PUT OUT 100 PERCENT ON THE DAY OF THE TEST. NERVES TEND TO MAKE YOU MORE UN STEADY AND HIGHER IN THE KNEES AND SLOWER. BENDING YOUR KNEES WILL HELP GIVE YOU STABILLITY AND MAKE FOR STRONGER PUSHES.

SKATERS WHO RECIEVE A PASS, WILL MOVE ON TO THE NEXT TEST. SKATERS WHO RECIEVE A RE TRY WILL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THEIR TEST AND WORK ON IMPROVEMENTS TO TAKE THE TEST AGAIN AT THE NEXT TEST DAY.

A TEST IS A FORMAL PROCESS, AND SKATERS AND PARENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BEHAVE WITH DECORUM, RESPECTING THE JUDGE’S NEED TO FOCUS ON THE SKATERS. PLEASE SIT AWAY FROM WHERE THE JUDGE IS SITTING – USUALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STANDS AS HE OR SHE NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE SKATER AND CONCENTRATE ON WHAT IS TAKING PLACE ON THE ICE.

SKATERS AND PARENTS – REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR MANNERS AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AS TEST DAYS ARE A FORMAL EVENT, EVERYONE MUST BE ON THEIR BEST BEHAVIOR – TEMPER TANTRUMS , BAD MANNERS AND LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE JUDGE, COACHES, OR OTHER SKATERS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. TEST DAYS ARE ABOUT ACHIEVING ONE’S PERSONAL BEST AND RECIEVING FEEDBACK AND THAT IS WHAT THE COACHAES ARE THERE TO SUPPORT.

BECAUSE OF THE CHALLENGE TO THE SKATER AS THEY ADVANCE THROUGH THE STARSKATE TEST SYSTEM, IT IS IMPORTANT TO RETAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND ALWAYS BE SUPPORTIVE OF THE SKATER.
