Skate Canada Professional Coaches
Skate Canada professional coaches who teach CanSkate must be NCCP Level 1 certified or higher, have a valid first aid certificate and be registered with Skate Canada.
The role of the Skate Canada professional coach is to:
- Prepare fun, challenging and safe lessons for the appropriate age level
- Plan skill circuits, drills, exercises, etc.
- Direct the program
- Group and re-group skaters
- Train, supervise, assess and evaluate program assistants
- Assess skaters and ensure the progress of all skaters
- Select music for the program
- Keep efficient records for the program
- Plan effective ice usage
- Provide advice on skating matters - i.e. Equipment, progression to other programs, etc.
Program Assistants
The Skate Regina enlists the help of program assistants to assist the Skate Canada professional coaches in the delivery of the CanSkate program. The program assistants keep the session moving while the coach provides instruction to small groups.
Program assistants are required to complete a Skate Canada training program each year. The training program includes on-ice training as well as classroom instruction to teach circuits, games and fun activities.
The role of the program assistant is to:
- Assist the Skate Canada coach in delivering the program on-ice and off-ice
- Demonstrate skills
- Supervise practice sessions
- Lead warm-ups and cool-downs under the direction of the Skate Canada coach
- Set up and lead on-ice circuits and stations
- Reinforce learned skills (follow-up on coach instruction)
- Lead exercises, drills, learning activities and creative expression
- Hand out awards (ribbons, stickers, badges, etc.)
- Take attendance
- Be a role model for young skaters
